What to Bring to a Live Poker Tournament

What should you bring to a live poker tournament?

Bring valid photo ID, a reliable way to pay, comfortable layers, your phone and charger, any medication you need, and as little extra baggage as possible. Check the venue’s entry rules before travelling. Poker rooms provide the cards and chips. Your job is to arrive eligible, comfortable and able to stay longer than planned.

The cards are private. The colour is not.

The things that can stop your day before it starts

Photo ID comes first. UK casinos must verify age, and major live events commonly ask for valid government-issued identification. A passport or driving licence is the cleanest answer. A photograph of your ID may not be accepted.

Check whether you need casino membership or an event account, whether registration is cashless, and when late registration closes. Do that before leaving home, not while the first level disappears.

PokerStars Live’s venue guidance also tells players to bring valid government-issued photo ID. The host venue’s own rules still win.

Made for the table. Exactly where it belongs.

Dress for the room, not the arrival

A poker tournament can begin in a warm queue and end under aggressive air conditioning. Wear comfortable clothes and take one light layer you can add or remove. Shoes matter more than anyone admits; you may be sitting for hours, but breaks involve queues, stairs and sudden missions for food.

If you want the fuller WHITE HOT view, read What to Wear to a Poker Tournament. The short version is still: look like yourself and prepare for the temperature to change its mind.

Power, water and medication

Charge your phone before you arrive and carry a small power bank or cable. Tournament apps, seat draws and messages all drain battery. Keep the device off the playing surface and follow the room’s phone policy while a hand is live; our guide to using your phone at a poker table covers the etiquette.

Bring prescribed medication in its normal packaging. Take water if the venue permits it and a simple snack if outside food is allowed. Check first. A protein bar confiscated at the door has achieved very little.

What not to bring

  • A large bag that has nowhere sensible to go.
  • Loose valuables you will spend all night checking.
  • A laptop unless you genuinely need it and the venue permits it.
  • Your own chips, cards or anything that creates avoidable confusion.
  • A rigid plan for when you will finish.

Pack light. Keep your ID safe. Assume the session can run late. The useful tournament kit is the kit that disappears once you sit down.
