Can You Use Your Phone at a Poker Table?

Sometimes—but being allowed to bring your phone into the cardroom does not mean you can use it whenever you like. The important questions are whether you have a live hand and which rules the game follows.

Under the currently published Poker TDA tournament rules, players with live hands cannot interact with electronic or communication devices. That includes the apparently innocent stuff. “I was only changing the song” is still using the phone. Poker TDA, Rule 5

Folded does not mean anything goes

The same TDA rules prohibit phone conversations at the table and devices resting on it. They also prohibit poker strategy tools and outside strategy advice at the table. Folding is not permission to open a solver while everyone else plays.

Those are tournament rules, not a universal description of every cash game. Ask your dealer what the room permits rather than relying on something somebody got away with in Vegas five years ago. Poker TDA rules and scope

My practical advice is simpler than memorising every exception: put the phone away when you receive cards. If you need to take a call, finish your hand and ask where you can step away.

After folding, make sure a quick message does not become twenty minutes of the dealer trying to get your attention. You have paid to sit in a live game. There is something to be said for noticing it.

If you are new, asking “What’s the phone rule here?” takes about three seconds. It is a much better opening line than arguing after being told off.

Keep the phone handy. Keep the hand yours.
