Can You Take Chips Off a Poker Table?

Can you remove chips from a poker table while playing?

No. In a live cash game, the chips in front of you normally stay in play until you leave the game. Pocketing part of a winning stack while continuing to play is commonly called ratholing or going south. It breaks the table-stakes principle and is usually against house rules.

The story can wait.

Why the chips must stay

Your visible stack tells every opponent how much can be won or lost in a hand. If you buy in for £200, win a £300 pot and secretly remove £250, you have changed the effective stakes without leaving the table.

Other players made earlier decisions against a stack that was available to be wagered. You do not have to give anyone “a chance to win it back”, but you do have to keep the game state honest while you remain seated.

PokerStars Live’s cash-game rules state that chips and cash must remain on the table until a player quits, apart from permitted payments for casino products and services. Your room may word the rule differently. The floor decides.

What if you need to pay for food or a drink?

Some rooms allow chips to be used for venue purchases. Some do not. Ask the dealer before removing anything from your stack.

The important distinction is visibility and permission. Taking a £5 chip to pay an approved table-service bill is not the same as putting £200 in your pocket to reduce your exposure.

Can you cash out and return with less?

Usually not immediately. Many rooms use a minimum return period: leave and rejoin the same game too quickly, and you must return with at least the stack you left with, subject to the table’s buy-in limits.

The exact period varies. PokerStars Live publishes a three-hour rule for returning to the same game. Other rooms use different windows. Ask the floor before cashing out if you expect to return.

You are free to leave a cash game; our guide Can You Leave a Poker Cash Game at Any Time? covers the clean way to do it. Leaving is not ratholing. Leaving, hiding part of the stack and quickly returning short is.

What should you do with large-denomination chips?

Keep them visible. Do not bury them behind smaller stacks or hold them in your hand. Clear stacks protect everyone from misunderstandings about effective stack size.

If you are moving tables, use a rack and follow staff instructions. Tournament chips deserve even tighter control: removing them from view can lead to forfeiture or disqualification under Poker TDA rules.

Want money off the table? Finish the hand, tell the dealer you are leaving and cash out properly. The cage has pockets for this exact purpose.
